Narsarsuaq means "The Great Plain", Greenland
Narsarsuaq means "The Great Plain". Narsarsuaq was a US Air Force base and army hospital until well past the Second World War, when it was finally handed over to Denmark.
Today Narsarsuaq (airport code: UAK) is one of the two international airports on Greenland - the other one is Kangerlussuaq/Søndre Strømfjord (airport code: SFJ) further North.
Qoroq Fiord is South of Narsarsuaq and occasionally sends smaller icebergs from the Qoroq Glacier up towards the end of the airport runway.
This statue of Leif Eriksson is located across the water from Narsarsuaq, next to the excavations of the first viking settlement in Greenland. Leif Eriksson led the viking expedition to Greenland and found a decent spot across the bay from Narsarsuaq.
This is how the viking settlement looks today - it's between the four houses in front and the red house up the road. One third in from the right at the middle of the picture you can spot the tiny reconstructed church with its wooden belltower just left of it, and behind the church you can see reconstructed main house, which had some 50 inhabitants. Privacy was not common then.
